Dentist Blog

It's surprising the new types of whitening products that are out there on the market these days. Here are some examples of whitening approaches that may surprise you, many of which combine old ideas or use more naturalistic methods. They are worth trying before jumping to a professional.

Whitening Floss

Believe it or not, there's floss out there that will help you whiten your teeth while you floss. This way, you can take care of two parts of dental care that you need to take care of all at once. After all, floss can get all the way around teeth in a way that's more effective than many other whitening methods. You'd be surprised what strange angles are visible to people who can see your teeth.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil can help make your teeth whiter if you use it after brushing. You'll want to fill a spoon with the oil and then rinse out with it after brushing. You can also rub the coconut oil into your teeth and gums with a cloth afterwards. The antimicrobial effects of coconut oil are helpful in this regard as well.

Baking soda

There's a reason why baking soda is used in so many toothpaste products. You can cut out the middleman here and use the baking soda directly to help with whitening. Sodium bicarbonate is very slightly abrasive, so it can help to gnaw away at stains on the surface of your skin without causing serious damage.

Additionally, the substance is alkaline. Acid can lead to discoloration, so cancelling it out with an alkaline like sodium bicarbonate is a good idea. If you want, you can also combine this with lemon juice which will bleach your teeth. By combining it with sodium bicarbonate, you will also ensure that the acidity is neutralized. That way, you don't add to the acidity in your teeth with the lemon juice. This is also applicable if you eat a lot of acidic foods.

In the end, strips, trays, and other professional methods may be your best bet to getting your teeth the shade that you want. However, it's important to note that amateur methods that can make a real difference before you commit to cosmetic dentistry. That way, you can tell how severe the issue is and you can apply the most minimal solution that will accomplish the job. Professional whitening, however, will always yield consistent results.

Think Twice Before Rationing That Halloween Candy

Halloween is a holiday that my children love, and telling them they can't go door-to-door collecting candy would break their hearts. This led me to allowing them to collect candy on the holiday, then rationing it out to them every day instead of letting them gobble it up in just a few days. I always thought this was better for them, but my dentist told me this could be the reason why their February dental check-ups were always their worst ones. Daily candy consumption was taking a toll on their teeth. I started a new tradition of letting them indulge for two days, then giving them the option to swap the rest with me in exchange for a new toy. They never pass on the opportunity for a new toy. I created this blog to encourage other parents find similar tactics to keep their children's teeth healthy after Halloween.
