Four Medical Reasons Why You Might Receive Laser Gum Treatment From Your Dentist

Dentist Blog

Laser gum treatment is the use of hot lasers to address a particular gum disease or disorder. If you have a dentist who offers this treatment, you may ask for it as a cosmetic procedure. Otherwise, here are four medical reasons why a dentist may prescribe laser treatment for your gums.

You Have an Infection, and Your Immune System Is Compromised

If you get an infection in your gums and traditional antibiotics are not going to work because your immune system is compromised, your dentist will prescribe laser treatments. The laser can help remove a lot of the infected tissue while surgically sterilizing the area to prevent further infection. Since the laser can help kill the infection and reduce the number of bacteria causing it, your body and immune system are in less jeopardy than they were when the infection was not under control.

You Are a Hemophiliac

Hemophiliacs have a blood disorder that prevents their blood from clotting. Bleeding gums from periodontal disease is not a good comorbid issue to have as a hemophiliac, even if your disorder is partially controlled through medication. Laser gum treatment can help cauterize gum tissue, thereby stopping some of the bleeding you are experiencing (if not all of it). If you do have this procedure, be sure to start an excellent oral hygiene regimen almost immediately after the procedure has been completed.

Your Periodontal Disease Can Be Reversed with Laser Gum Treatments

Some minor cases of periodontal disease and gingivitis may be reversed with laser gum treatments. Your dentist will tell you if you are a good candidate for this treatment with regards to these gum tissue diseases. If you are not a good candidate, your dentist can suggest several other approaches that may reduce your periodontal disease and/or gingivitis. If you can get these oral diseases under control and you do not have hemophilia, AIDS, HIV or other compromising disease/disorder, then you may eventually be allowed to receive the laser gum treatments.

Your Medications Have Caused Your Gums to Appear Rotten

While most medications as a whole will not affect your gums, there are some that will, over time, make your gums discolored and very unpleasant to look at. Your dentist may prescribe laser gum treatments not so much for aesthetic purposes as for making sure your gums are healthy and not actually rotting. The laser can remove a thin layer of tissue from on top of the gums, revealing the gum tissue below and revealing any serious adverse effects of your medications. Then you can discuss what to do next if any of your gum tissue actually is suffering from the side effects of your medications.

Think Twice Before Rationing That Halloween Candy

Halloween is a holiday that my children love, and telling them they can't go door-to-door collecting candy would break their hearts. This led me to allowing them to collect candy on the holiday, then rationing it out to them every day instead of letting them gobble it up in just a few days. I always thought this was better for them, but my dentist told me this could be the reason why their February dental check-ups were always their worst ones. Daily candy consumption was taking a toll on their teeth. I started a new tradition of letting them indulge for two days, then giving them the option to swap the rest with me in exchange for a new toy. They never pass on the opportunity for a new toy. I created this blog to encourage other parents find similar tactics to keep their children's teeth healthy after Halloween.
