If your dentist has recently suggested dental crowns to place over a damaged tooth in your mouth, you may be wondering what the point of this is. Here are three important things to know about dental crowns so that you can see why your dentist's suggestion is definitely not something to take lightly:
A Dental Crown Protects Your Teeth From Further Damage:
If you have a severely damaged tooth, getting a dental crown is one of the best ways to protect it, which also protects the surrounding teeth because it can prevent infection from spreading. This can also help you avoid further damage so that you can potentially avoid extraction in the future. Your dentist will place the crown and treat the tooth to help get rid of the damage and then you can continue to leave the crown in place to cover up the aftermath of the damage. This will make it appear as if you have a perfectly white and healthy smile.
A Dental Crown Can Last Years:
Once you have a dental crown in place, it's important to know that it can last for years. This means that the money you invest in the dental crown is going to be worth it not only because you can expect the crown to last for years, but also because you are going to be protecting that tooth from further damage, which means less money is going to need to spend on your dental work over the years.
A Dental Crown Is Easy to Care For:
Finally, you can expect your dental crown to be really easy to take care of. Basically, you will be taking care of your teeth the same way as you normally do, which is by flossing and brushing regularly. The only difference is that you should really avoid eating hard candies that can potentially crack the dental crown. However, hard candies can also crack your normal teeth, which is why they are always best to avoid anyway.
When you know these three important things about dental crowns, you can be sure that you understand why it is likely a good idea to proceed forward with the treatment right away if it is something that your dentist recommends. In the end, you can save more money in the long run while still being able to sport a beautiful, white smile for years to come. To find more info, contact a local dental clinic.

Halloween is a holiday that my children love, and telling them they can't go door-to-door collecting candy would break their hearts. This led me to allowing them to collect candy on the holiday, then rationing it out to them every day instead of letting them gobble it up in just a few days. I always thought this was better for them, but my dentist told me this could be the reason why their February dental check-ups were always their worst ones. Daily candy consumption was taking a toll on their teeth. I started a new tradition of letting them indulge for two days, then giving them the option to swap the rest with me in exchange for a new toy. They never pass on the opportunity for a new toy. I created this blog to encourage other parents find similar tactics to keep their children's teeth healthy after Halloween.
