No parent wants to be told that their child has cavities. Cavities mean that your child will have to return for fillings, which can be stressful and costly.
To avoid this scenario, parents need to understand how to prevent cavities in children. There are a few simple steps that you can take to help your child reduce the risk of developing cavities.
Find a Tasty Fluoride Toothpaste
When shopping for toothpaste, make sure it contains fluoride. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and can reduce the risk of cavities. To encourage your child to brush regularly, find a flavored toothpaste that your child likes.
Buy Your Child a Toothbrush They'll Enjoy Using
It's important to buy a toothbrush that your child likes. Choose one with soft bristles and an age-appropriate handle. Make sure it is replaced every few months, as the bristles start to wear down over time.
Spend Time Flossing Together Nightly
Flossing is a crucial part of any oral hygiene routine. Show your child how to floss properly, and then set aside time each evening to floss together. This will make it easier for them to form the habit of regular flossing.
Don't Encourage Fear About the Dentist
Many children are scared to visit the dentist. Make sure your child knows that going to the dentist is an important part of taking care of their teeth.
Explain that dentists can help them keep their teeth healthy and strong. It's a good idea to avoid talking about cavities or fillings as if they are scary.
Limit Sugary Drinks and Treats
It's important to limit sugary drinks for your child. If you provide sweet drinks, including juice, encourage small glasses that are finished with meals. After the meal, encourage your child to brush their teeth to limit exposure.
You can encourage your child to drink plenty of water during the day as well. This will rinse away food and acids.
Talk to a Dentist About Dental Sealants
Dental sealants can be used to fill in any deep pits or crevices on the surface of your child's teeth. This is a common treatment that your dentist may recommend to help protect and strengthen their teeth.
Make a Dental Appointment ASAP If You Suspect Cavities
If you think your child has cavities, it is important to make an appointment with the dentist as soon as possible. Early treatment can help prevent the decay from spreading and causing more problems.

Halloween is a holiday that my children love, and telling them they can't go door-to-door collecting candy would break their hearts. This led me to allowing them to collect candy on the holiday, then rationing it out to them every day instead of letting them gobble it up in just a few days. I always thought this was better for them, but my dentist told me this could be the reason why their February dental check-ups were always their worst ones. Daily candy consumption was taking a toll on their teeth. I started a new tradition of letting them indulge for two days, then giving them the option to swap the rest with me in exchange for a new toy. They never pass on the opportunity for a new toy. I created this blog to encourage other parents find similar tactics to keep their children's teeth healthy after Halloween.
